Workshop 1: Quality infrastructure for Biomedical Engineering

09:00 - 10:00

Local: Auditório COPPETEC (Sala 1)

Palestrante: Dr. Rodrigo Felix.

Resumo: Quality infrastructure (QI) is a system that comprises organizations (public and private), along with the policies, the relevant legal and regulatory framework, and the practices necessary to support and improve the quality, functional and environmental safety of products, services, and processes. This definition is given by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The IQ comprises some tools, many of them provided for in the definition of Basic Industrial Technology in Brazil in the 1980s and 1990s. According to the National Confederation of Industry (CNI), these tools (or pillars) are Metrology, Standardization, Accreditation, Conformity Assessment, Technical Regulation and Market Surveillance. Recently (2025) the new National Strategy for Quality Infrastructure (ENIQ) was proposed at the national level. It is essential that every professional working in Biomedical Engineering, whether they are a professional in the industrial sector, entrepreneur, teacher or professional in training, knows the principles of IQ to better position themselves in the job market. Understanding the mechanisms and learning how to act and benefit from IQ will make the difference between today's and tomorrow's professionals. This course intends to introduce the theme, presenting and discussing the most relevant aspects of IQ in the scenario of professional and academic performance of Biomedical Engineering.

Workshop 2: Application of Dynamic Elastography in Musculoskeletal Biomechanics

09:00 - 10:00

Local: Sala Reunião COPPETEC (Sala 2)

Palestrante: Dra. Liliam Fernandes

Resumo: Classical aspects of muscle mechanics will be concisely addressed, including the estimation of muscle force using EMG-driven modeling approaches, the assessment of the Achilles tendon tangent modulus via ultrasonography, and the characterization of regional muscle activation using high-density electromyography. Dynamic elastography—particularly shear wave elastography—has been increasingly applied to these domains, offering novel insights into the mechanical behavior of both muscular and connective tissues. Despite existing technical constraints related to its application in the musculoskeletal (MSK) system, validation studies have demonstrated satisfactory levels of accuracy and reliability. Furthermore, clinical and exercise-related applications of elastography will be presented, highlighting its potential utility in both rehabilitation and physical conditioning contexts.

14:00 - 15:00

Local: Auditório COPPETEC (Sala 1)

Palestrante: Dr. Eduardo Moreno

Resumo: Many of the problems in physics are solved from differential equations also known as strong form. In practice, such solutions are derived from analytical methods in relatively simple domains. For complex domains, however, numerical methods are required where the finite element method or FEM provides a solution. This workshop shows, in a first part, the mathematical basics of this FEM method to obtain these solutions based on the COMSOL tool. A second part shows simulation models of various piezoelectric transducers, ultrasound propagation models in non-homogeneous media and blood flow.

Workshop requirements: No requirements.

Workshop 4: An introduction to artificial neural networks for biomedical data

14:00 - 15:00

Local: Sala Reunião COPPETEC (Sala 2)

Palestrante: Dr. Wilfrido Gómez-Flores.

Resumo: This workshop explores the basics of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) by introducing essential concepts, such as the perceptron model, and traces the evolution to more complex architectures, including multilayer perceptrons and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). Participants will also gain insights into the mathematical principles underlying neural network training, including backpropagation, optimization algorithms, regularization techniques, and GRAD-CAM methods for improving model explainability. A significant focus of the workshop is the application of ANNs and CNNs to classify breast lesions in ultrasound scans through practical exercises in Python on Google Colab, featuring "from scratch" implementations that bridge mathematical theory with programming practice, along with the use of key libraries for developing artificial neural networks.

Workshop requirements: a personal computer or laptop, an Internet connection, and a Google account to use Colab.

Resumo: This seminar will present two prototypes of a hardware, firmware, and software development and testing platform for ultrasound image generation. The prototypes were developed in a partnership between researchers from 5 universities and 2 research institutes, supported by the Ministry of Health through contracts with the National Health Fund (FNS) and FINEP. The universities involved were: UNICAMP (project leader), UFRJ, UFSCar, UTFPR, and USP (São Paulo and Ribeirão Preto campuses). The research institutes were: INCOR/SP and Instituto de Pesquisas Eldorado (IPE). The first prototype included the construction of equipment capable of assisting in diagnosis with B-mode, M-mode, and Doppler-mode images, as well as the development of 64-element phased array ceramic transducers. The first prototype was demonstrated in operation at the GECIIS (Health Industrial and Innovation Complex Management Group) meeting, led by the Ministry of Health with the participation of the Ministries of Planning and Science and Technology, as well as government agencies and development banks and industries linked to health. The second prototype was completed during the COVID-19 pandemic, with reduced costs and hardware size, connecting to a computer with a GPU board for processing signals sent by the hardware and generating images with total control of the matrix transducer elements for the formation and digital processing of ultrasound images. The characteristics of the two platforms will be presented and discussed, showing the gains for the country and the advantages and disadvantages compared to existing platforms on the market.

Palestra: Metrology improves experimental reliability of ultrasound applications: The role of measurement uncertainty

09:00 - 10:20

Local: Sala Reunião COPPETEC (Sala 2)

Local: Sala Virtual 2 - Link:meet.google.com/ucb-idir-xmy

Palestrante: Dr. Rodrigo Félix

Resumo: This lecture presents the fundamental role of measurement uncertainty in enhancing the reliability and reproducibility of ultrasound-based experiments. Grounded in the principles of metrology as defined by the International Vocabulary of Metrology (VIM), the talk addresses common misconceptions surrounding key terms such as true quantity value, repeatability, reproducibility, measurement error, accuracy, precision, and uncertainty. Misinterpretation of these concepts often leads to flawed experimental design and limits the comparability of results across different studies and laboratories. Particular emphasis is placed on measurement uncertainty as a rigorous quantitative descriptor of the quality of a result. The lecture demonstrates that uncertainty evaluation is not inherently complex, relying primarily on well-established statistical tools such as standard deviations and the Student’s t-distribution. The Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM) is introduced as a structured framework for developing uncertainty budgets, integrating both Type A (statistical) and Type B (non-statistical) contributions. Focusing on ultrasound applications, the presentation discusses how inadequate treatment of uncertainty can compromise data interpretation and hinder technological advancement. Practical examples illustrate the consequences of neglecting metrological principles and the benefits of adopting a systematic approach to uncertainty estimation. By clarifying core concepts and presenting accessible methods for uncertainty evaluation, this lecture aims to provide researchers and practitioners with the necessary tools to improve measurement quality. Ultimately, the adoption of sound metrological practices supports more robust, transparent, and reproducible scientific outcomes in ultrasound and related fields.

Palestra: Ultrafast Doppler and functional ultrasound: a novel research platform in Uruguay for studying brain alterations.

11:00 - 12:30

Local: Auditório COPPETEC (Sala 1)

Local: Sala Virtual 1 - Link:meet.google.com/kgc-reio-rsm

Palestrante: Dr. Javier Brum

Resumo: With the development of ultrafast ultrasound imaging—capable of acquiring thousands of frames per second—the sensitivity of ultrasound to detect slow blood flow has increased by two orders of magnitude compared to the previous decade. This advancement enables the visualization of blood flow changes in small brain arterioles, which led to the introduction of ultrasound as a fully functional neuroimaging modality [1]. Similar to functional MRI and functional optical imaging, functional ultrasound (fUS) leverages neurovascular coupling to indirectly monitor neuronal activity through ultrasound Doppler signals. fUS inherits the well-known advantages of ultrasound imaging: it is safe, rapid, and capable of imaging deep tissue with high spatiotemporal resolution (100 μm, 100 ms). As a result, fUS has been successfully employed to map the activity of specific brain regions across various cognitive states in rodents, primates, and humans, establishing itself as a powerful tool for investigating brain dynamics and connectivity [2]. The aim of this talk is to review the major developments in ultrafast Doppler and fUS imaging, and to highlight their most recent applications, with special emphasis on the contributions of our group in Uruguay studying the neurodegenerative disease of Charcot-Marie-Tooth [3]–[5]. Specifically, in the work of Anzibar et al. [5], using fUS and functional connectivity analysis, we demonstrated that TrJ mice—an animal model of Charcot- Marie-Tooth disease—exhibit significantly diminished neurovascular responses and altered brain connectivity compared to wild-type controls. These findings suggest a central nervous system involvement that could shift our understanding of the Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.

Resumo: Breast cancer is currently one of the leading causes of death from malignant tumors in women worldwide. Technologies for early detection of this disease are crucial for improving survival rates. Medical imaging plays a vital role in breast screening by detecting abnormalities, which are interpreted by radiologists trained in this field. To assist these specialists in analyzing images more efficiently, computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems have been developed. These systems utilize computer vision methods and artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance images, detect abnormalities, segment images, and classify findings. CAD systems typically employ one of two AI approaches: machine learning, which relies on features defined by engineers, and deep learning, which uses artificial neural networks to learn features at various levels of abstraction automatically. Numerous studies have shown promising results with both approaches, suggesting that CAD systems have the potential for clinical use. However, despite the availability of some commercial CAD systems, their adoption within the medical community has been limited due to unresolved ethical and legal challenges. This presentation will address all these aspects to provide a comprehensive overview of AI use in breast cancer diagnosis.

Palestra 7: Magnetic resonance imaging: advanced tools for exploring biomarkers of cerebral hemodynamics

14:45 - 15:30

Local: Auditório COPPETEC (Sala 1)

Local: Sala Virtual 1 - Link:meet.google.com/kgc-reio-rsm

Palestrante: Dra. Steren Chabert

Resumo: Cognitive function depends on the functional integrity of the brain, an organ without energetic reserves whose activity relies entirely on properly regulated blood flow and efficient extraction of oxygen and glucose. Therefore, a detailed assessment of cerebral hemodynamics—beyond mere measurements of blood velocity in large vessels—is essential to understand both normal physiology and pathological alterations. This talk will present recent developments and applications of advanced biomarkers derived from magnetic resonance imaging, aimed at analyzing cerebral hemodynamics. Modeling strategies based on physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) will be discussed, designed to robustly estimate the hemodynamic response function (HRF) as a biomarker of neurovascular coupling health. Additionally, results from various biomarkers in glioma, acute phase stroke, and adolescent development will be shown, illustrating the potential of these innovations to advance our understanding of cerebral physiology and to contribute to a more comprehensive assessment of brain health.
